This past Monday, Kentucky farm families were recognized for their work in the agriculture industry. Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell saw a need to celebrate farm fresh foods, so he proclaimed August 4-10 as Farmers’ Market Week in Kentucky.
The signing took place at a pop-up farmers’ market in Hazard, where numerous supporters showed up to back the work of Commissioner Shell and their local farmers. This is just the beginning of Commissioners Shell’s work for the “Food is Medicine” campaign. There has been an increase in focus in heart healthy meals and the long-term benefits of nourishing foods that come straight from the farm. The hope is to help encourage Kentucky to move closer to the farm to table movement.
All farmers’ markets welcome both consumers and producers to help encourage meaningful conversation and lasting relationships. A variety of agriculture commodities are sold from fresh flowers, to USDA inspect meat.
Commissioner Shell says, “Farmers’ markets remain a vital resource to get farm fresh foods directly to our Kentucky consumers.”
You can help create lasting connections to local farmers by coming to the Downtown Farmers Market in Hopkinsville on August 8.
