Joe Leavell receives the Melvin Turner Leadership Award from Dr. MLK Jr. Commission of Kentucky

Speaking of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of Hopkinsville’s own is being honored by the MLK Commission of Kentucky, for his leadership and servant’s heart.

Joe Leavell is the Assistant Director of Hopkinsville Community College’s Upward Bound program, which focuses on taking students through an intensive six-week summer program that drives home education on subjects such as English, Spanish, math and science. Outside of that program, Leavell is heavily involved in numerous service organizations and efforts across the community, setting a shining example of leadership and service onto others.

The MLK Jr. Commission of Kentucky awarded Leavell the Melvin Turner Leadership Award, under the leadership of Governor Andy Beshear.

Leavell is acting as the keynote speaker for the Hopkinsville Human Rights Commission MLK Day service at HCC on Monday, set to begin following the MLK March from Freedom Elementary, starting at 9 a.m. that morning.
