The Kentucky State Capitol building in Frankfort will be closed to the public starting today, as construction begins on a huge renovation project to upgrade the historic building.
This project marks the first comprehensive overhaul of the building in over 70 years, and comes with a $291.5 million price tag that was approved and funding by the Kentucky General Assembly. It’s likely to be a multi-year long project, and is set to modernize infrastructure, enhance accessibility, improve safety and update both public and staff areas.
That does mean that the agencies located in the building, such as the Governor’s Office, the Legislative Research Commission, the Kentucky Supreme Court, the Attorney General’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office, will be housed elsewhere while work is underway.
You can find a list and a map of where those agencies can be found on capitolmove.ky.gov
To ensure safety, parts of the Capitol Grounds will be closed to visitors during the renovation period. However, many areas will remain open, including the Floral Clock, the flower beds and green space on Capitol Avenue, the Kentucky COVID 19 Memorial, and the Gold Star Families Monument.
