Ky. State Fair gets underway, showcasing agriculture across the Commonwealth

The 120th Kentucky State Fair is underway in Louisville and it brings with it a celebration of agriculture from across the state.

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell helped get the festivities started Thursday morning, with the Commodity Appreciation Breakfast, featuring Kentucky Proud products such as country ham, fried catfish, steak and eggs and fruit.

Shell took a moment to talk the state of agriculture in the Commonwealth, saying that it’s an ever-evolving industry that comes with its fair share of challenges. He says right now, grain farmers are struggling due to a decline in global prices, which is just one of many factors farmers have to consider each year.

Commissioner Shell says on the flip side, livestock and horticulture developers are looking good.

He calls the State Fair the annual exposition on behalf of agriculture, showcasing the promising future through the youth in the Future Farmers of America and 4-H programs, and illuminates the best of the best from across Kentucky.
