The Hopkinsville Police Department is preparing to host events to engage with the members of the community and to highlight their law enforcement duties.
Public Information Officer, Colette Marfil appeared on WHOP and talked about upcoming events such as Touch-a-Truck, Cops and Bobbers and their Citizen’s Police Academy.
Touch-a-Truck is hosted by Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation and is set to take over Debow Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Marfil says the event kicks off their summer itinerary.
Marfil says the police department will have their BearCat SWAT vehicle on display for children to explore, sit in the driver’s seat and sound the siren. At the event from noon to 1 p.m. will be a sensory hour where no lights or sirens will be activated on service vehicles.
On Saturday, May 18 the police department is hosting Cops and Bobbers a first-time event. Marfil says the department is responsible for opening Lake Morris every day and Police Chief, Jason Newby thought it would be fun to open up the lake and go fishing with the community.
Marfil says the event starts at 7 a.m. and along with fishing the police department will also be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs.
Looking toward June, Marfil says they will be having a cook-out with the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library and on June 10 the start their Citizen’s Police Academy. Marfil says the academy is like a crash course regarding police duties, attendees will learn about processing evidence, traffic stops and much more.
The academy is six weeks long with one class session each week. Marfil says those interested in attending the academy can pick up an application from the Hopkinsville Police Department. More information about events the police department is hosting can be found at their Facebook, Hopkinsville Police Department.
