In their mission to revitalize Attucks High School, Men 2 Be hosted a benefit concert on Saturday to unveil the renderings for the renovated high school and kick off their fundraising efforts.
Men 2 Be is a local nonprofit that works to uplift boys in the community by supporting them academically and teaching them life and social skills.
Attucks High School was built in 1916 and was Hopkinsville’s first public school for Black students. The school became an integrated middle school in 1967 and closed in 1988. Now Men 2 Be is working to transform the school into a community center.
LaDessa Lewis the co-founder of Men 2 Be shared that the Nashville Community Gospel Choir put on a show and they were able to raise $11,345 toward their goal of $1 million for phase one of renovations. Guests also got to view renderings of the finished high school and Lewis says it was amazing to see the goal they are working toward.
Lewis says phase one is focused on getting a roof on the historic side of the building and establishing a residential area for senior citizens.
By the end of 2025, Lewis says they hope to have the money raised for phase one and by the end of 2026 they plan to have phase one of renovations completed.
