As the weather warms up, Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation is gearing up to host community fun events such as their 2024 series of Movies in the Park, Touch-A- Truck, Squealin’ on the Square and much more.
Rachel Sanders from Parks and Recreation appeared on WHOP and shared that the 2024 series of Movies in the Park kicks off on Saturday at Tie Breaker Park with a showing of “Wonka” and starting at 6 p.m. there will be family fun activities available such as bounce houses, arts and crafts and pick-up style sports along with food trucks.
Unlike their past series of Movies in the Park, Sanders says they will have a full year of movies featuring three movies during the summer and then the series picks back up in the holiday season with a Halloween movie night and a Christmas movie night.
Along with Movies in the Park starting on Saturday, Parks and Recreation is inviting the community to Touch-A-Truck on Saturday at Debow park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kids will be able to explore emergency service trucks, sit down in the driver’s seat and sound the sirens.
At the event, Sanders says from noon to 1 p.m. will be the sensory hour for children who do not like loud noises.
Parks and Recreation will also be hosting their first ever youth flag football tournament. Sanders says team registration is open until May 31 for children between the ages of 9 and 14 and each team should consist of five participants and one coach.
The one-day tournament is on June 22 and registration is available in-person at the Thomas Street Recreation Center.
Sanders also shared that registration for their Summer Adventure Day Camp is open and positions are filling up quick. Camps run weekly from June 3 through July 26 and applications can be picked up from the Parks and Recreation office at the Thomas Street Recreation Center.
Applications for teams to compete in Squealin’ on the Square, Hopkinsville’s annual barbecue festival competition are also open. Squealin’ on the Square is set for June 7 at Founder’s Square and Sanders says they are taking up to 10 teams. The competition includes categories for chicken, pork and ribs.
Those interested in competing can grab an application form Parks and Recreation’s website and turn it into their office at the Thomas Street Recreation Center.
