A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close southbound Exit 111 of Interstate 69 in Madisonville this weekend to begin application of a new high friction treatment.
According to a news release, high friction surface treatments are pavement treatments designed to increase friction in potentially high crash areas. It should result in motorists being able to maintain better control in both wet and dry driving conditions.
A research report published by the Federal Highway Administration suggests that HFST can reduce wet crashes by as much as 83 percent and total crashes by 57 percent.
Weather permitting, southbound Exit 111 to Grapevine Road near the Western Kentucky Archery Complex will close beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday and reopen at 12 a.m. on Sunday. There will be no marked detour.
