Public library looks to serve the community as a whole with outreach programs

The Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library is more than just a building—and the staff have been working hard to bring their service and literacy to the community as a whole.

Speaking with WHOP Wednesday morning, Library Coordinator Mary Alice Jasper explained that while their much-needed renovations are underway, they’ve had to get creative to keep providing that exemplary service they’re known for to the community.  And, they’ve been doing some community outreach.

Jasper says the librarians recently got together and revamped the library at Western State Hospital, organizing and restocking it, giving those patrons a place to borrow books while receiving treatment.

Jasper says she also understands that while the library serves the whole of Christian County, they are located in Hopkinsville, which means individuals in places such as Crofton, Oak Grove or Lafayette may not be able to make to the library that often. So, she’s been packing up some books and taking the library to them.

There’s also the Hopkinsville-Christian County Imagination Library, which has been a staple in the community for many years now, providing children ages zero to five years old with free, age-appropriate books each month.

All children in Christian County can sign-up, with no cap on the number of kids who can be in the program.  Find out more by contacting the library at (270) 887-4262.
