Monday is final day of the 2024 session of the Kentucky General Assembly and there’s already been veto overrides and more legislation passed when legislators reconvened in Frankfort last Friday.
Representative Myron Dossett says they didn’t waste time overriding big vetoes by Governor Andy Beshear, including House Bill 5, also known as the Safer Kentucky Act. Dossett says hr was glad to see that override happen, as he believes the bill really will help the Commonwealth become safer for its citizens.
Another veto override was for House Bill 1, which is a one time expenditure from the budget reserves bill that Dossett says will directly benefit retirement systems and numerous other projects and systems in the state.
Along with the overrides, the legislature also passed Senate Joint Resolution supporting the Kentucky Community Technical College System and the new President Ryan Quarles and a bill making it a requirement for Kentucky students to learn cursive writing in schools.
Monday is the last day of the veto session and the last day of the session as a whole—if legislators want to pass any further bills, they have until midnight to do so, or it will have to wait until the session in 2025.
