Sanctuary, Inc. to host domestic violence awareness events

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Sanctuary, Inc. is preparing to host events to support assault survivors as well as spotlight the nonprofit’s resources.

Sanctuary opened in 1984 and has since become a nonprofit that provides support and resources to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault across the Pennyrile Region.

Nonprofit Executive Director Heather Lancaster recently appeared on WHOP and shared that domestic violence impacts one in three individuals. She calls October an opportunity for them to remind the community of Sanctuary’s services.

This October, Lancaster says they plan to shine a light on child domestic violence. She says Sanctuary and the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library are partnering to host a Captain Underpants-themed donation drive. Lancaster says they will be accepting underwear donations for the children they serve.

To kick off the month’s events. Lancaster says they are partnering with the Book and Bottle Shop to host a trauma-informed yoga session on October 2. Then, on October 15, Lancaster says they will be hosting the Speak My Name Candlelight Vigil, remembering Kentuckians who have died over the past year as a result of domestic violence.

Sanctuary members are also set to join local elected officials on October 21 to declare the month as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As October approaches, more information about the upcoming events will be posted on Sanctuary, Inc.’s Facebook page.
