Sanctuary to host events in April raising awareness for sexual assault

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, and Sanctuary, Inc. Executive Director Heather Lancaster shared how they plan to raise awareness and spotlight resources available for assault survivors.

Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization in the Pennyrile Region that provides support and resources to empower survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. At Thursday’s Hopkinsville Kiwanis Club meeting, Lancaster shared that the month starts with Wear Teal Day on April 1.

Teal is the official color for sexual assault awareness and Lancaster encourages the community to wear the color to stand in solidarity with assault survivors.

Then on April 18, folks are invited to Milkweed Health and Harmony Emporium for the Chair Project auction and art party. The community is invited to create and design a chair which will be auctioned off and the funds will go toward Sanctuary.

Folks interested in designing a chair for the auction have until April 1 to register and the chair must be completed ahead of the auction.

Chalk the Walk is on April 21, and Lancaster says folks are encouraged to write messages of support to assault survivors on public sidewalks

Denim Day concludes the month on April 30 and the community is invited to wear denim to take a stand against sexual assault victim blaming. Denim Day began after an Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction in 1992 because the victim was allegedly wearing tight jeans.
