School board approves construction changes, bids for necessities

Construction changes to the consolidated Christian County High School and bid approvals were the main topics at Thursday’s Christian County School Board meeting.

Despite the recent inclement weather, Tim Geegan from Alliance Corporation says construction is progressing at the consolidated high school. By June, Geegan says he expects all of the school’s roofing to be complete.

Sidewalks are being installed and Geegan says they need some sustained dry weather in order to lay asphalt for the parking lots. The board approved four change orders resulting in an increase to the school’s price tag of around $637,000.

The changes concern the installation of site grading and storm drains at the athletic fields as well as floor boxes in the gymnasium, ceiling and bulkhead adjustments and the removal of wall films.

The board approved a wide array of bids for the 2025-2026 school year. They approved bids for gasoline and diesel fuel, lubricants, antifreeze and alternative fueling sites for buses. Bids for copy paper, mulch, carpet installation and pest control were also approved.

The board also approved class and extracurricular fees for the upcoming school year, but before doing so District 1 Representative Erin Westerfield asked if there was way for parents to know upfront how much fees were so that they weren’t surprised later in the school year.

Superintendent Chris Bentzel agreed with Westerfield’s concerns and says he has received messages from parents who have been surprised by fees. Going forward he says they will work to establish a system that notifies parents earlier on about fees.
