The 2024 session of the Kentucky General Assembly is officially underway after legislators gaveled in at noon Tuesday, marking the start of the 60-day session.
The first day was not without discussion, as legislators went back and forth briefly about the rules, which have been unchanged for several years and legislators moved to pass them without adjustments. Arguments were made about transparency, last minute changes and same-day votes with Senator Reggie Thomas saying the rules have made it too easy to fast-track legislation.
House Majority Leader Steven Rudy contends that these rules have worked appropriately for years.
Ultimately the House voted to keep the rules unchanged heading into session. Members agree to continue talks with changes to the rules possible down the line. So now work begins on a budget, with Representative Jason Petrie saying he feels good about progress so far.
Petrie represents a portion of Christian County, and all of Todd and Logan Counties.
Along with the start of the session, a public swearing-in ceremony was held Tuesday of Kentucky’s State Constitutional Officers, including Secretary of State, Attorney General, Agriculture Commissioner, State Treasurer and State Auditor.
