Snow and ice shut down area schools as work gets underway to clear the roads

Schools will remain closed for at least the first half of the week in Christian County, and surrounding counties as well, as crews work to clear the roads in the wake of Winter Storm Fern.

Speaking with WHOP Monday, Superintendent Chris Bentzel says it was with wise choice to go ahead and call off school through Wednesday, even if it’s something he’s never done during his tenure. He says, even without the lingering icy conditions, the brutal cold is reason enough to keep students safe and warm at home.

He did remind students to login and do that Non-Traditional Instruction Day work, saying he knows NTI Days aren’t popular, but they serve their purpose of keeping kids educated while making sure they don’t have to stay in school longer during the summer.

While the buildings and buses wait for students to return, officials will be going to those locations throughout the week to make sure they stay in tip-top shape.

Keep track of our closings and cancellations on our website, and we’ll see if the sun and the road crews are able to help clear the roadways enough for students to make it to school this week.
