State Chief Justice joins local judges, lawyers for Constitution reading

In May, current and retired Christian County judges and lawyers annually gather to read the U.S. Constitution in its entirety. For this year’s reading they were joined by Kentucky Chief Justice Laurance VanMeter on Thursday.

VanMeter has served as Chief Justice since January 2023 and is the third justice to have served in all four levels of the Kentucky court system. VanMeter is set to retire at the end of the year so he is visiting communities across Kentucky before then.

Circuit Court Judge, John Atkins welcomed VanMeter on Thursday and recognized his accomplishments and thanked him for his service.

VanMeter read articles five through seven of the Constitution and concluded by thanking those in attendance for their hospitality.

Once the constitution was read, Atkins emphasized the importance of the Constitution calling it the foundation of citizen’s freedoms.

Constitution readers also included Circuit Judge Andrew Self, Senator Elect Craig Richardson, Christian County Bar Association President Olivia Adams, Commonwealth’s Attorney Maureen Leamy and many others.
