Tour of Christian County highlights the strengths and charms of its cities

The audience at the Christian County of Chamber of Commerce’s Eye-Opener breakfast Thursday morning got to go on a bit of a journey through Christian County, hearing from numerous individuals representing the incorporated cities of the county.

Those cities include Crofton, Lafayette, Pembroke, Oak Grove and Hopkinsville, and Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam was the tour guide for the morning, as representatives from those respective communities spoke. Judge Gilliam says the county as a whole bring a wide-array of diversity and experiences, and that only makes us stronger.

The tour got started with Crofton, and County Magistrate John Bruce highlighted their agricultural roots and how they’ve been growing, with two new restaurants opening recently, and he was happy to announce that all of Crofton will soon have internet service.

Then we went down the road to Hopkinsville, where Mayor J.R. Knight highlighted the many goals of his Growing Home initiative, from public safety to infrastructure and more, and he says he’s always been proud to say he’s from Hopkinsville.

Two stops were made in southern Christian County with Pembroke and Oak Grove, and Magistrate Phillip Peterson spoke of his pride in the City of Pembroke. He says they’re working on a lot right now, including getting a storm shelter in the city and building a new fire station for the Pembroke Fire Department.

Oak Grove has been a hot spot for economic activity late—one could argue they’ve seen an explosion of developments and housing, and Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver says they’re not done yet.  She says Buc-ee’s is going to be a boon not just for her city, but the county and region as a whole.

While it may be our smallest incorporated city, that doesn’t mean Lafayette isn’t hard at work. Commissioner Brandon Borneman says they’re working on improving their city park and installing new sidewalks—he says quiet town doesn’t mean empty.

Magistrate Russ Guffey wrapped things up for the tour, saying it shows that all the cities in this county are working to improve, grow and work for the benefit of their citizens—which is just one of the many reason that Christian County is one of the best places you can call home.
