The Tennessee Valley Authority—and through them local energy providers—are asking for the public’s help in keeping energy consumption down during this intense cold snap.
Speaking with WHOP News Thursday morning, TVA Spokesperson Adam May says they are asking folks to take part in a voluntary reduction in energy, just to help take the edge off of the stress on the energy grid. Between the hours of 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. each morning, you can help out by not using the washer or dryer and other appliances—and that could help save you a little money as well.
He gave some tips on how to save on energy costs while still keeping your house warm. Aside from the usual lowering of your thermostat by a few degrees, May says some lesser-known tips include sealing gaps around your front door, slightly lowering the temperature on your water heater, run those ceiling fans counter-clockwise and more.
For each degree you lower your thermostat, you can save three percent on your energy bill. Things are expected to warm back up during the weekend.
