You may have noticed a flurry of activity in downtown Hopkinsville on Tuesday, as Hopkinsville Electric System and the Tennessee Valley Authority handed out hundreds of hams.
It was made possible through a partnership with the TVA, HES and Impact Ministries, which is where the hams were handed out earlier this week, near the Christian County Justice Center. They had 444 hams to hand out, and they gave out roughly half of that amount within the first 30 minutes.
HES General Manager Jeff Hurd was thrilled with the turnout and are hopeful they were able to have a positive impact on the community just in time for Christmas.
Jana Sublett with the TVA says they had the idea to do these ‘ham drops’ due to more folks than normal struggling with food insecurity and rising costs this year, and they though this would a small way they could help out.
The TVA has more ham drops planned, including one in Todd County with Pennyrile Electric and Todd County Interfaith, set for Thursday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. while supplies last. That will take place at Todd County Interfaith, located at 602 South Streets Avenue in Elkton.
Then, they’ll be partnering with the Russellville Electric Plant Board on December 16 to hand out more hams at Logan County Good Samaritan, located at 602 East 4th Street in Russellville. The goal is to hand out roughly 3,815 hams to families across the TVA service region.
