Visit Hopkinsville to host inaugural Alien Invasion Day festival

On August 21, 1955 the Hopkinsville police station was swarmed with reports of people saying they had a close encounter with extraterrestrial beings in the Kelly community. The incident became known as the Kelly Green Men Encounter and this year Visit Hopkinsville will be recognizing the day with its inaugural Alien Invasion Day festival.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the alien encounter was annually recognized at the Kelly Green Men Festival in Kelly. Visit Hopkinsville Executive Director, Amy Rogers says she has often gotten calls from people asking if the festival would make a comeback, and after becoming director, Rogers says she thought it was time to establish an event recognizing the strange encounter.

Rogers says Alien Invasion Day will take place on August 21 at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The festivities kick-off at 4 p.m. and will feature story times about the encounter, local distilleries and vendors, a costume contest, bounce houses, face painting and a surprise that Rogers says they will announce soon.

With this being an inaugural event, Rogers says she hopes it is a springboard for grander Alien Invasion Days in the future. After publicizing the event on social media, she says their posts received a lot of attention and she is happy to host an event that the community has been wanting.

Tune into Visit Hopkinsville on Facebook for that special announcement and for additional details about Alien Invasion Day.
