YMCA spotlights staff, volunteers at annual meeting

The Hopkinsville-Christian County YMCA provided a 2024 recap, spotlighted outstanding staff and volunteers and announced the kickoff of their annual fundraising campaign at Thursday’s annual meeting.

Outgoing YMCA Chief Volunteer Officer Sandy Grogan highlighted what the organization provided for members in 2024. Grogan says the YMCA provided over 5,800 meals through its Summer Feeding Program and over 13,000 meals through its After School Feeding Program.

In 2024, the YMCA also had around 133,000 visits from nearly 5,000 members, over 1,100 youth participated in programs, 181 swim lessons were given and over 26,700 members participated in group exercise programs.

Grogan shared that some of those milestones were made possible by last year’s annual fundraiser which raised around $215,000

The YMCA building is over 20 years old and has undergone some repairs. Last year, Grogan says several HVAC units were repaired or replaced. Looking forward, she says the parking lot will repaved in May and a digital sign is set to be installed.

To recognize Grogan for her work, YMCA President Sheryl Ellis presented a bench dedicated to her that will sit at the organization’s playground. Grogan has served two non-consecutive terms as CVO.

Along with the bench dedication awards were given out. Norma LaFoy was recognized as role model of the year; Mike Pearson was recognized as Coach of the Year and Sandy Cavanah was recognized as Volunteer of the Year.

Bennett Greene is the incoming CVO and also served in the role in 2023. Greene says this year the Board of Directors will focus on enhancing communication and visibility and strengthening community connections.

Carter Hendricks the YMCA Annual Campaign chair concluded the meeting and encouraged attendees to support this year’s campaign to ensure that the organization can continue its services.

To raise money for the campaign, the YMCA will host a murder mystery dinner theater in March and Spin for a Cause in May.
